Please tell me why you chose Ichinoseki National College of Technology
Ever since I was little, I've loved making things, using computers, and making things work, and I wanted to work in a technical field in the future. Many of my family members and relatives have graduated from technical colleges or completed their majors, so I listened to various information and stories about my time at a technical college, and decided that I wanted to study there myself, so I chose this career path.
Please tell us why you chose the Department of Control and Information Engineering.
At the time, Ichinoseki National College of Technology had two departments with the word "information" in their names: the Department of Electronics and Information Engineering and the Department of Control and Information Engineering. I heard that the syllabus of the Department of Control and Information Engineering had a well-balanced mix of information technology and electrical and electronics content, and I was attracted to the fact that I could study a wide variety of fields. Above all, I basically liked everything that touched computers, such as information and security.
Did you have any experience using a computer before junior high school?
I've been using a Windows 6 computer at home since I was around 98 years old. I used a lot of things, including word processing software and games. I liked computers, but I also loved making things, including crafts, and at the time I was making all kinds of things out of construction paper and cardboard.
Please tell us about your experience of participating in K-SEC events.
While I was in school, I belonged to the electronic computer club and was the head of the department when I was a fourth year student. I participated in CTF (Capture the flag) with my friends and seniors, and at first I didn't know that security was the main focus, and thought it was like competitive programming, but as I solved the problems, I realized that I realized that this is security. I also participated in the technical college professional competition held every year.
Please tell me why you chose your current career path.
I became interested in the security industry after doing security-related activities with a friend. Although it comes with a great responsibility, I decided to apply for this position because of the novelty of being connected in various ways to what I have experienced thus far, the rewarding nature of the job, and the high degree of contribution.
Please tell us about your current job content.
I work in the SOC (Security Operation Center) department, which monitors cyber attacks and information leaks 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, mainly in the environments of major financial, manufacturing, and government-related customers. As a security analyst, in addition to monitoring security logs, I also regularly create and review logic for system monitoring and detecting incidents.
New products are coming out, and attack methods and strategies must respond to new ones one after another. That's why I find it so rewarding and fun.
Has your experience as a student been useful in your current job?
Many of the basic and specialized classes and experiments learned at technical colleges are related. For example, knowledge of infrastructure is required, so we need to understand the contents of the network, design logic for finding incident logs from a large amount of data, and when suspicious content is detected, investigate whether it is a real detection or a false detection. The contents of ``algorithms'', ``discrete mathematics'', and ``statistics'' are related to this.
I even tried setting up a decoy server called a honeypot due to on-site classes and the influence of a friend from my student days who was knowledgeable about security. Although my job is different, I still exchange information about security with that friend.
Please tell us your future goals.
Currently, I am gaining experience by working with various products. Because we are a company that handles cybersecurity measures comprehensively, there are many opportunities to deepen your knowledge by sharing knowledge from other departments and learning from seniors and colleagues. Through this process, I want to acquire a lot of knowledge and become a person who can even provide consulting to customers in the future.
Please give a message to your juniors.
Cyber security has become extremely important not only in IT-related fields, but also in all industries and governments. It's a job that gives you a sense of accomplishment and responsibility, knowing that you're protecting people. I feel a sense of responsibility and am able to approach my work while updating my knowledge every day, so I work with a fresh mindset. I think this is an industry that allows you to interact with society in a variety of ways, so if you have even the slightest interest, please give the security industry a try.
