Q&A regarding childbirth, childcare, and nursing care support

Q1 What systems are available to pregnant female faculty and staff?

Upon request, employees may not work late at night (including overnight shifts) or overtime. (Seafarers are prohibited from working onboard ships and working late at night or overtime.)
In addition, employees will be exempted from the obligation to devote themselves to work during an approved period in order to ease commuting, take breaks (supplementary meals), receive health guidance, or undergo a health checkup.

Q2 How many days of leave can I take before and after giving birth?

You can take special leave starting 8 weeks (14 weeks in the case of multiple pregnancies) before the expected birth date. As a general rule, you cannot work until 8 weeks have passed from the day after giving birth.

Q3 Is there a leave system for male faculty and staff to take before and after their spouse gives birth?

You can take advantage of spousal maternity leave (to accompany your child to and from the hospital) and leave to participate in childcare (to care for your child before and after giving birth).
Additionally, you can take childcare leave immediately after giving birth.

Q4 What kind of system is childcare leave?

This is a system that allows teachers and staff who are raising children under the age of three (part-time faculty and staff have children under one year old) to take time off to care for their children. Both husband and wife can take childcare leave regardless of the spouse's employment status.

Q5 By when and how should I complete the procedures for childcare leave?

Submit a childcare leave application form at least one month before the start date of childcare leave.

Q6 What kind of system is nursing care leave?

This system allows faculty and staff to apply for a leave of absence of up to six months (6 days for part-time faculty and staff) in order to care for a family member who requires care.

Q7 Who are the eligible family members who require care?

A condition requiring nursing care is a condition in which a person is unable to carry out daily activities for a period of two weeks or more due to injury, illness, or physical or mental disability. Eligible family members include spouses, parents, children, parents of spouses, and grandparents, siblings, and grandchildren who live with them and support them.

Q8 By when and how should I complete the procedures for family care leave?

Submit an application for family care leave and documents proving the family member in need of care at least one week before the start date of family care leave.

Q9 What will happen to my salary and status during my childcare or nursing care leave?

While you are on leave, you will not be paid a salary, but you will receive benefits (childcare leave/nursing care leave) from employment insurance.
While you are on leave, you will not be engaged in any work, but there are service regulations such as prohibition of acts that damage credibility and restrictions on concurrent employment.
